Manager of Transmission & Distribution, Copper Valley Electric Association, Inc., Valdez, Alaska

Copper Valley Electric Association is seeking a team-oriented professional to join its Management Team. CVEA serves 3,700 customers with 36 full-time employees over 400 miles of distribution and 106 miles of transmission line in the Copper River Basin and Valdez regions of Alaska, a geographic area roughly the size of the state of West Virginia (23,000 square miles).

CVEA’s corporate headquarters are located on the western boundary of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in rural Glennallen, approximately 180 miles east of Anchorage. CVEA maintains a district office in Valdez, Alaska; the Manager of Transmission & Distribution position is based out of the Valdez office.

Position Responsibilities

The successful candidate will manage the electric distribution and transmission systems of the Cooperative by analyzing and developing projects that enhance system operations, implementing new and existing technology, and applying the Cooperative’s technical skills and abilities to new project opportunities. Proven technical and technology skills, demonstrated leadership, and superior written and verbal communication skills are required. In addition to providing management oversight, the candidate will supervise the engineering and operations functions of the utility, manage capital projects and system improvements in assigned areas of responsibility, and will function as a technical resource to the CEO and Board of Directors.

Experience & Education

Ten years experience, including all phases of operation and maintenance of a rural electric utility is required along with a BS degree in Engineering in appropriate disciplines. The successful candidate should have a strong working knowledge of electric systems operations. Travel between the two districts is necessary and outside the service territory as required. Compensation

This position is salary exempt. The successful applicant is expected to perform as necessary to accomplish the responsibilities of the position. CVEA maintains a competitive range in a grade base pay compensation plan, which is updated annually. Initial placement in the plan depends upon experience and qualifications. Knowledge in the areas of power generation, transmission, distribution, power markets, RTOs, industrial loads, rate issues and member relations are required. Experience in supervising and developing people, planning, developing work programs and budgets, developing and presenting reports, and organizing and coordinating operations and measuring the end results of such operations is required.  Experience in personally working with boards and consumer groups is highly desirable. Regulatory and legislative experience considered important. 

Must believe in and be dedicated to the rural electrification program and to basic cooperative philosophy and be willing to become a proponent of these concepts. Must have a strong interest in growing and developing in a program which will offer continual challenge. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and personal/people skills. A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field is required.

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Engineer, Great River Energy, Elk River, Minnesota

We currently have an opening for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Engineer within the System Operations department.  This position will provide engineering support to ensure high availability and reliability of GRE’s transmission system.  Main responsibilities include:

  • Provide Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) configurations for new installations and changes to existing installations.
  • Recommend changes and additions to the SCADA system to provide better information and effective control capabilities on the transmission system.
  • Maintain data files including configurations, software updates, and firmware revisions for RTU’s, communication processors, and data concentrators.
  • Provide specifications and System Operations requirements for RTU’s and related hardware.
  • Provide hardware support for RTU’s, communication processors, and data concentrators.
  • Provide software and configuration programming support for RTU’s, communication processors, and data concentrators.
  • Make recommendations on system component upgrades.
  • Ensure transmission and generation metering requirements are met.
  • Review telecommunications requirements and enhancements for new and existing sites.
  • Develop and update process and documentation standards for RTU communication connections with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED’s).
  • Provide technical support and backup capabilities for the load management system.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering, Energy Management System (EMS) Computer System Support, Field Services, and other utilities to ensure consistent and timely SCADA installations.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable industry standards and regulations, and GRE standards.  

    To qualify, you must have the following:
  • BS degree in electrical engineering required.  Engineer in Training (FE) certification or Professional Engineer registration in the State of Minnesota is preferred.
  • 4+ years experience working with SCADA systems; including RTU’s and associated equipment and Protocols (especially DNP).
  • Strong knowledge of RTU related hardware, software, and configuration.
  • Experience with load management systems.
  • Logical problem solving skills, with the ability to thoroughly research issues and analyze various types of information.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capable of working on multiple projects and tasks and completing the necessary work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective work relationships.
